solitary bee that dig in the sand?
Towards the end of August we always get this digging bee that burrows into the softer areas of the infield sand of our baseball field. We go about a month without practicing on the field and they star showing up. Each hole is dug by just a single bee that we come out backward pushing sand out with its back legs. They are about 2-3 inches long with yellow strips on the abdomen. They are intimidating looking but just fly around you but never land on you. Right know there are about 20-30 holes in the sand infield that look like a small volcano.
What are they and how do I get rid of them?
Looks like you have stumped a few gardening experts… What you are describing are what is called “miner” or “digger” bees. And yes they are solitary and the queens are the ones that are digging the burrows to lay their eggs.. The are very docile and non-aggressive and rarely if ever sting. I would just let them do their thing as they will not hurt anyone. Better to keep the chemicals locked up on this one. They are not the greatest pollinators in the bee family, but they do a fair job. It is always good to save as many pollinators as we can, as you may already know, the bee populations are at an all time low…..Here is a link that explains miner bees…
