Essential Equipment For Keeping Bees

There are a few items of basic equipment used by every beekeeper.

It is easy to get carried away and buy too much equipment.

Only a few items are really essential.

Clothing to protect you from bee stings is the most important piece of equipment.

When you are starting out it is likely you will get stung no matter what you wear.

As you gain experience you will be stung less often, and experienced beekeepers can wear less protective clothing.

A traditional beekeeper suit is essentially white coveralls with elastic in the cuffs and pant legs.

Bees are attracted to bright colors, and usually ignore the color white.

Bee-suits are usually a baggy fit, to keep the bees’ stingers off the skin.

A beekeeping hat with a veil of screen mesh keeps bees away from your neck and face.

Bee stings on the neck and face are painful and can be dangerous.

A sting on the neck can cause swelling that could make it difficult to breathe, or a sting near the eyes might make it difficult to see clearly.

A few experienced bee-keepers do not wear gloves, but they are usually essential for anyone just starting out.

You can try using household rubber gloves but bees may be able to sting through these.

A bee smoker creates puffs of smoke to calm the bees when you are working with them.

Smoke makes the bees less aggressive.

Bees communicate by chemical messages that are masked by the smoke.

The most common smokers have bellows.

Each blast of the bellows provides of fresh air to the fuel inside and creates a puff of smoke.

A hive tool is a small pry bar designed specifically for use on beehives.

It is used to separate parts of the hive, and scrape clean the frames of honey.

The frames are often stuck together with bee-glue which they collect from the bark and buds of trees.

Bee-keepers use a device called a bee-feeder to top-up the food that they find for themselves.

Bee-feeders usually have a reservoir of sugar syrup that drips from the feeder to the hive below.

It is a good idea to feed a new colony of bees to start them off well.

Bees may need top-up feeds at different times of the year, and will need feeding before winter.
