Beekeeping Hive – 8 Building Quick Steps    by Mclean Dearth

Anyone can purchase a beekeeping hive once you locate the nearest bee shops, but if you’re the DIY kind of person, you can build your own hive. This is a very personally rewarding process for every beekeeper and woodworker. Here is a simple guide on how to set up your own beekeeping hive:

Assembly

1. Choose a location where the bee colony will succeed. The best location is where there is a wide variety of flowers and trees, and a rich source of water (preferably running and fresh). It should provide ample sunshine and proper circulation of air.

2. Put the bottom board of the hive with a landing strip. The brood chamber must be on top of the bottom board. The chamber is where the queen bee will mate and produce eggs.

3. Put a metal frame structure to prevent the queen bee from moving upward. All upper levels of the hive are exclusive for honey storage only.

4. Put your foundation frames in a brood frame or box. It should be richly covered in beeswax, and in it are hexagonal cell shapes, this is where the bees will store the honey.

5. Put an inner hive cover at the topmost level. This area will allow proper air circulation within the hive.

6. Install a feeder tray for a faster process in feeding the sugar syrup to the bee colony without the need to open the bee hive.

7. Secure the beekeeping hive with a cover on top. It should be made of metal for maximum protection of the colony against winds and rains.

8. Put the hive cover on top of your created hive complex. Many beehive covers available consist of metal and have telescoping sides. Covers are essential for the protection of the hive from the elements, particularly wind and rain.

After installing the beekeeping hive you can now accommodate your bees and start beekeeping and collecting honey. Be sure to follow up once in a while to make sure that things are running smoothly in the hive. Don’t forget to do the following:

1. Heck the hive every 5 to 7 days. Use the smoker to calm the bees down. This will provide you ample time to replenish the sugar supply.

2. Check the queen bee every now and then. If you noticed that she has not been laying eggs or is dead, replace queen bee immediately.
