Seven Key Components To The Langstroth Beekeeping Hive
A beehive is an enclosed structure in which honeybees live in, raise their young, and store and make honey. There are many different types of beekeeping hives used today. For instance there is the Beehaus hive, this is the most modern hive, which hit the market in 2009. Then there is the National hive, most commonly used in the United Kingdom. The most common hive used in beekeeping today is the Langstroth hive.
The Langstroth hive is the standard hive for the majority of the world’s beekeepers. This is not the only hive of this type, but it is the most popular one used. Many of the hives today are based on the Langstroth hive design. The hive has a straightforward construction and a standardized design makes the hive an obvious choice. The support structure of the hive is wooden and can hold nine to ten combs. The frame has no top or bottom, which allows the combs to hang freely inside. The combs for the Langstroth hive are made from plastic foundations or sheets of wax. The honeybee deposits honey and pollen into the cells in the comb. The Langstroth beehive is known as the removable frame hive, this allows the beekeeper to remove the frame in order to easily extract the honey.
The Langstroth hive is designed to be put together from top to bottom.
There are seven key components to the Langstroth hive.
1. Hive Stand: Protects the bottom board from cold transfer and from rotting. It also serves as a support for the upper hive components and provides a landing board for the bees.
2. Bottom Board: Bees entrance into the hive
3. Brood Box: Where the queen bee lays her eggs and it is located at the bottom part of the hive
4. Honey Super: Typically this is shorter then the brood box and is located in the upper most part of the hive. This is also where the honey is stored
5. Frames and Foundation: Wax or plastic sheets with a comb impression that allows the bees to build wax honey combs. The frame that holds the combs can either be wooden or plastic
6. Inner Cover: Provides separation from the outer cover, which can be either hot or cold depending on the weather. It can also be used as a shelf for feeding as well as other purposes
7. Outer Cover: Protects the beehive from weather conditions
